Ghana Prison Service urges public to support reintegration of ex-convicts
The Think Prison 360° initiative is designed to revitalize the Ghana Prison Service by focusing on welfare, productivity, and institutional rebranding.
The Ghana Prison Service has called on the public to play an active role in the reintegration of ex-convicts into society, stressing that many inmates undergo genuine transformation during their incarceration.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday November 4, as part of the Think Prison 360° initiative, ASP Abdeel Quansan, the focal person for the programme, emphasized that prisons are not merely punitive institutions but centers for reformation and rehabilitation
“Most of the inmates come in without skills or education, but through our rehabilitation programmes, they acquire training and moral guidance. Unfortunately, when they return home, society often refuses to accept them because of their past crimes.” ASP Quansan explained.
He lamented the stigmatization faced by ex-convicts, noting that many leave prison reformed and ready to contribute meaningfully to national development.
“If you visit our prisons today, you will be amazed at the level of transformation among some inmates. Many have become skilled artisans, some have found faith, and others have even become preachers. They deserve a second chance to rebuild their lives.” He added.
Touching on the Think Prison 360° initiative, ASP Quansan said the programme is designed to revitalize the Ghana Prison Service by focusing on welfare, productivity, and institutional rebranding.
“For far too long, the Prison Service has been neglected. The Director-General is now charting a new path to resource and reposition the service. This includes prioritizing the welfare of officers and inmates, engaging in agricultural mechanization, and establishing industrial hubs to make the service more self-sustaining.” He stated.
He reiterated that the initiative aims not only to improve the conditions within prisons but also to foster a society that embraces rehabilitation and supports reformed individuals in their journey back to normal life.
