One year gone, but not a single hour of the 24-hour economy has started – Bryan Acheampong
The former Minister for Food and Agriculture said that although the idea is brilliant, the government has yet to roll it out to create jobs for the youth.
Dr Bryan Acheampong, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential flagbearer aspirant, has criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for failing to implement the 24-hour economy policy, a key component of its 2024 election manifesto.
The former Minister for Food and Agriculture said that although the idea is brilliant, the government has yet to roll it out to create jobs for the youth.
The 24-hour economy policy was a major campaign message of the NDC in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections. It was touted as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic transformation strategy under President John Mahama which will allow key sectors of the country to operate a 24-hour shift system.
Speaking during a media engagement in Bolgatanga, Dr Acheampong intimated that the government had taken the Ghanaian people, especially the youth, for granted after enjoying overwhelming endorsement during the 2024 elections.
“The NDC gave big hope to the Ghanaian youth with the 24-hour Economy. One year down the line, we have not even started one-hour of the 24-hour Economy.”
Dr Acheampong said the government had failed to properly lay a solid foundation for the implementation of the policy in line with modern trends, which is necessary to ensure its success and address the country’s growing youth unemployment challenge.
He urged the government to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive and to address the rising cost of goods and services.
“Where are we going as a government to ensure that we are creating the enabling environment so that businesses can thrive?” He asked.
