Navrongo MP calls for sanctions against nonperforming sanitation contractors and agencies

Speaking during a National Sanitation Day exercise held in Navrongo over the weekend, Aworigo expressed frustration at the poor state of sanitation in some parts of the area, where waste bins often overflow for days without being emptied.

The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Akibange Aworigo, has called for greater accountability from organizations and contractors responsible for managing waste in the municipality.

Speaking during a National Sanitation Day exercise held in Navrongo over the weekend, Aworigo expressed frustration at the poor state of sanitation in some parts of the area, where waste bins often overflow for days without being emptied.

“If you look around, you can see that it’s very bad. I’m sure some organisation is paid to ensure that this is emptied. We should not wait for skips to overflow and then call everybody each month to come and clean.” He lamented.

He stressed that waste management agencies must be proactive and consistent in delivering their duties, warning that those who fail to meet their obligations should face sanctions.

“If this is given out on a contract and the contractor or whoever is responsible does not do it, the person should be punished. In other jurisdictions, when agencies fail to collect rubbish on time, they are charged a penalty, and that encourages them to do their work properly.”

Aworigo also urged residents to adopt cleanliness as a daily habit rather than treating it as a monthly activity tied to the National Sanitation Day.

“We should know that it’s not only every month that we need to stay clean, but we need to stay clean every day. The organizations and departments that are responsible for cleanliness, I want to call them to action.” He added.

The MP reaffirmed his support for President Mahama’s reintroduced National Sanitation Day initiative, emphasizing that maintaining a clean environment requires both community participation and institutional responsibility.
