About four shops located behind the wall of St. John Bosco College of Education in Navrongo were destroyed by fire on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire outbreak, which occurred around 1:30 PM, reportedly started in one of the shops and rapidly spread to adjoining stores, razing properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis. Eyewitnesses said the blaze intensified quickly before help arrived.
Some shop owners who were present at the time managed to salvage a few belongings, while others who were not at the scene lost all their properties to the fire.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Navrongo Command, responded to a distress call and rushed to the scene to douse the fire. However, it took the firefighters nearly two hours to bring the situation fully under control.
An eyewitness, who placed the distress call alleged, that the fire service personnel delayed before arriving at the scene and suspected an electrical fault as the possible cause of the fire.
No casualties were recorded.
When contacted by Mike FM, the Ghana National Fire Service declined to comment on record. It however indicated that investigations would be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.
Following reports by Mike FM, the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Aworigo Akibange, sympathised with the affected shop owners and residents, and commended the Ghana National Fire Service for their efforts in controlling the blaze.
