Pungu Traditional Council establishes education fund to support needy but brilliant pupils

The Pungu Traditional Council has launched an education fund aimed at supporting brilliant but underprivileged pupils at the basic school level to pursue their academic ambitions.

The fund was unveiled during the Easter Peace and Development Festival hosted by the Chief the area, Pe Adatuga Paribajea Abayage Anankware III at the Pungu Primary School Park on Sunday, April 5.

Addressing a large gathering at the event, Pe Anankware III underscored the importance of education in driving the development of the Pungu area.

He reiterated the urgent need to end child marriage, stressing that protecting the girl-child and keeping them in school is critical to securing the community’s future.

“I want to reiterate the ban placed by the Paramount Chief of the Navrongo Traditional Area on child marriage. Let us all support efforts to keep our girls in school and safeguard their future,” he stated.

The Chief also emphasized the role of peace in development, calling on natives both at home and in the diaspora to unite and contribute meaningfully to the progress of Pungu.

Representing the President at the event, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, commended the Traditional Council for the initiative and reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving education, particularly for the girl-child.

“The President is deeply committed to education and is particularly passionate about initiatives that promote girl-child education. Efforts are underway to address gaps in the sector and improve outcomes,” he said.

He further announced a donation of GH¢40,000 from the President and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in support of the fund.

According to him, plans are also in place to commence the construction of 70 educational infrastructure projects across the Upper East Region starting April 13.

Also speaking at the event, the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Akibange Aworigo, described education as a cornerstone of his development agenda.

“As your Member of Parliament, education is at the heartbeat of my development agenda. It is our most powerful weapon against poverty,” he noted.

He outlined a number of interventions he has undertaken to improve education in the constituency, including the provision of scholarships, financial support to students through his share of the District Assembly Common Fund, procurement of school furniture, and the construction of classroom blocks through the GETFund, among others.

The colourful festival brought together political leaders, traditional authorities from across the region and neighboring countries, as well as members of the community and well-wishers.

It was marked by vibrant cultural displays celebrating the rich heritage of the Pungu people.
