Mahama has been consistent in fighting galamsey – NDC Communicator
Abuga said since assuming office in 2025, President Mahama has demonstrated consistency in tackling the menace by making it clear that he would not condone, cover up, or shield any of his appointees found complicit in illegal mining activities
Benjamin Biadana Abuga, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team for the Navrongo Central Constituency, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday September 15, Abuga said since assuming office in 2025, President Mahama has demonstrated consistency in tackling the menace by making it clear that he would not condone, cover up, or shield any of his appointees found complicit in illegal mining activities.
“This is a testament to his readiness to fight the menace forcefully.” Abuga stated
He further agreed with the President’s recent position that existing laws provide sufficient authority to address illegal mining, rather than declaring a state of emergency.
“It is not as if declaring a state of emergency is bad or will destroy the country. No. But he is only saying that we have not gotten to a point where we need one, because there are still avenues within our existing laws that can be explored.” Abuga added.
According to him, while the fight against galamsey is not over, monumental successes have been achieved under the current administration.
“We are not there yet, and we are not out of the woods. But very monumental successes have been chalked. Major things have been done and major moves have been made.” He added.
Abuga cited initiatives such as Goldbod, the Alternative Livelihood Initiative, and the government’s plan to train young people in responsible mining practices as clear evidence of President Mahama’s commitment to tackling the menace sustainably.
