Upper East NPP Chairman calls for consensus selection of parliamentary candidates ahead of 2028
According to him, adopting a consensus-based selection approach would better position the party to improve its electoral fortunes in the region, given the unique political dynamics at play.
The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Anthony Namoo, has called on the party to consider selecting parliamentary candidates rather than conducting competitive primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to him, adopting a consensus-based selection approach would better position the party to improve its electoral fortunes in the region, given the unique political dynamics at play.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, February 2, on the aftermath of the party’s recent primaries, Namoo argued that the current system of primaries has not served the party well in the Upper East Region.
“As a party, the time has come for us to recognise the fact that we must come together and select candidates, for instance in Navrongo, and do the same in Bulsa South. With that, the whole party will rally behind the candidate, because the system is not good for primaries.” He stated.
He explained that internal elections often deepen factionalism within the party, weakening unity and ultimately contributing to the loss of parliamentary seats in the region.
Citing past experiences, Namoo recalled the challenges faced in the Navrongo Central Constituency.
“You remember Navrongo Central, it wasn’t easy. Despite our best endeavours, consultations, and meetings to calm tensions, our people did not understand us. A constituency that was once loyal to us was lost, and in 2024, the situation even worsened.” He said.
Namoo stressed that a united front behind carefully selected candidates would enhance cohesion and improve the NPP’s chances of regaining lost ground in the Upper East Region ahead of future elections.
