He explained that mental health encompasses a person’s psychological, emotional and social well-being, including the ability to solve problems, manage emotions and maintain healthy communication and relationships. According to him, when these three aspects function effectively, an individual can be considered mentally healthy.

Akanparege outlined signs of poor mental health as persistent sadness or mood swings, withdrawal from social activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating and exaggerated excitement. He noted that behavior is often a reflection of one’s thinking and emphasized the need for early attention to unusual patterns.

He identified workplace stress, societal pressure, economic hardship, illness, relationship challenges and substance abuse as major contributors to mental health problems. He cautioned that mental health conditions can affect people of all ages and may lead to suicide, job loss, broken homes and reduced national productivity, while also placing financial strain on families and the country through treatment costs.

He further urged individuals to manage expectations to avoid unnecessary disappointment, practice kindness and compassion, share their concerns with trusted persons and embrace self-acceptance. Akanparege also called on families and society to support rather than stigmatize people facing mental health challenges, warning that lack of support can worsen their condition.
