EPA calls for collective responsibility to address waste and protect environment in Kassena Nankana Municipality

According to her, poor waste management practices contribute significantly to environmental pollution and pose serious health risks to residents

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has called on residents of the Kassena Nankana Municipality to take greater responsibility for waste management in order to maintain a clean environment and safeguard public health.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, March 5, the Municipal Head of the Authority, Priscilla Kuguriye, said improper waste disposal remains one of the major environmental challenges confronting the municipality.

According to her, poor waste management practices contribute significantly to environmental pollution and pose serious health risks to residents

“Waste is a huge issue here. Many people do not dispose of waste properly. We must all make it our responsibility to keep our environment clean for our own health and safety.” She stated.

Kuguriye also highlighted other environmental concerns affecting the municipality, including water pollution, environmental degradation, deforestation among others.

She stressed that protecting the environment should not be left solely to regulatory bodies but must involve the active participation of all members of the community.

“We must all ensure that the environment is protected because when the air is contaminated, we all breathe it in. When there is an outbreak of disease, everyone is affected. The EPA regulates activities, but when the consequences come, we all suffer.” She added.

She expressed optimism that the Kassena Nankana Municipality could become a model for environmental protection in the region if residents and institutions work together to uphold responsible environmental practices.

Kuguriye further explained that the Authority has brought its services closer to the people and encouraged institutions, schools, and business operators to visit the EPA office to obtain the necessary environmental permits for their operations.

Businesses and institutions such as chemical and agricultural input dealers, hotels, hospitals, medical laboratories, pharmacies, schools, churches, restaurants, pubs, supermarkets, and fuel filling stations are required to secure operational permits from the EPA before commencing their activities.
