Patronise shea butter to boost Ghana’s shea industry — WOM
According to the organisation, increased local patronage of shea butter will not only expand the domestic market but also provide nutritional benefits compared to some imported alternatives.
The Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM) in the Upper East Region has joined calls for Ghanaians to prioritise the consumption of locally produced goods, particularly shea butter, to strengthen the country’s shea industry.
According to the organisation, increased local patronage of shea butter will not only expand the domestic market but also provide nutritional benefits compared to some imported alternatives.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, March 16, the Income Generation Officer of WOM in the region, Lovia Moor, highlighted the importance of embracing locally produced shea butter, especially as the nation marks Ghana Month.
“We should patronise our own products. Shea butter can be used for cooking and does not have the harmful effects associated with some foreign oils. It is time we reduce our dependence on imported products and place value on what we produce locally.” She stated.
Moor further emphasised the need for Ghana to move beyond the export of raw shea nuts and butter, urging stakeholders to invest in value addition and processing into finished goods to drive local consumption and increase revenue.
She noted that the shea butter value chain presents significant opportunities for improving livelihoods, particularly in rural communities, and encouraged greater participation among women.
“It is something that can provide income and create jobs, enabling individuals to support their families. I encourage more women to get involved in shea butter processing.” She added.
