Accidents contributing to rising disability numbers in the Upper East Region- GFD

He revealed that some individuals who have joined the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations in recent years became disabled as a result of road accidents.

The Upper East Regional President of the Ghana Federation of Disability  Organisations (GFD), Mark Atia Ismael, says road accidents have become a major contributor to the increasing number of persons with disabilities in the region.

He revealed that some individuals who have joined the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations in recent years became disabled as a result of road accidents.

Speaking on Mike FM’s weekly social interest programme, Voices of Change, on Saturday, March 15, 2026, Atia warned road users, particularly the youth to be cautious when riding or driving.

“We must be very cautious when we are on the roads. I have a number of people who joined the organization as a result of road accidents, increasing the numbers.” He said.

He urged road users to take personal responsibility while using the roads to help prevent accidents.

“So, everybody must be cautious. As I always tell my riders, when you are on the road, see everyone as an unsafe driver except yourself that is how you can pass through safely.

“But if you assume everyone is normal, you may stay within your limits and someone else may crash into you. So, let’s always be very cautious and careful.” He added.

Atia further cautioned that no one is destined to become a person with a disability, advising the public to be careful in their daily activities.
