District to benefit from Free Primary Healthcare Initiative as Assembly plans Educational Fund for needy students and staff development

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, has disclosed that the Agenda 111 hospital project in the district is among 35 health facilities earmarked for completion by the NDC government.

According to him, the hospital project, which was initiated under the previous NPP administration and is currently about 70 per cent complete, is expected to significantly strengthen healthcare delivery in the district upon completion.

Akurugo further announced that the district had been selected as one of 150 districts across the country to benefit from the Free Primary Healthcare Initiative recently launched by John Dramani Mahama as part of efforts to advance universal health coverage in Ghana.

The DCE made the remarks while addressing Assembly Members during the first ordinary meeting of the Assembly held on Tuesday, May 26, at the Paga Motel.

Touching on education, Akurugo disclosed that the district currently has 69 kindergarten and primary schools, 61 junior high schools, and five senior high schools.

He stated that kindergarten enrolment stands at 3,930 learners, made up of 1,959 boys and 1,971 girls, while primary schools have a total population of 12,558 pupils, comprising 6,428 boys and 6,158 girls.

At the junior high school level, the district recorded 5,582 students, including 2,658 boys and 2,924 girls. Senior high schools in the district also have a total enrolment of 3,877 students, made up of 1,720 boys and 2,157 girls.

The DCE further revealed that 1,143 candidates are currently sitting for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), including 496 boys and 647 girls.

He noted that eight students living with disabilities and 17 pregnant students are among the candidates participating in the examination.

“This reflects the district’s commitment to ensuring that no learner is excluded from educational opportunities,” he stated.

Akurugo also announced the completion and handing over of a number of GETFund school infrastructure projects in various communities across the district, some of which were initiated under the previous NPP administration.

He added that the Assembly intends to establish a District Educational Fund to support brilliant but needy students in the district to pursue higher education.

According to him, the fund will also provide financial assistance and sponsorship opportunities for workers of the district seeking to pursue academic and professional programmes relevant to effective service delivery.

“The fund will also provide financial assistance and sponsorship opportunities to workers of the district who seek to pursue academic and professional programmes that are critical and relevant to the effective delivery of services in the district,” he said.
