James Agalga supports Builsa North flood victims with relief items
Majority Leader James Agalga donates relief items to support 1,205 Builsa North flood victims
The Member of Parliament for Builsa North and Majority Leader of Parliament, James Agalga, has donated relief items to the Builsa North Municipal Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for distribution to residents affected by recent flooding in the municipality.
The donation comprises 600 bags of rice, 400 bags of maize, 300 cartons of cooking oil, 500 blankets, 200 buckets, 500 cups, 500 plates and used clothing. An additional 500 mattresses are expected to arrive later.
Presenting the items at a short ceremony at the Builsa North Municipal Assembly, Agalga said he sought the intervention of the Minister for the Interior and NADMO headquarters after receiving reports from the municipal NADMO directorate about the extent of the flooding and its impact on residents.
He urged NADMO to expedite the distribution of the relief items, stressing that affected residents needed urgent support to alleviate the difficulties they were facing.
Agalga also called on the Municipal Assembly and other relevant state institutions to develop long-term measures to address the recurring flooding situation in the municipality.
He said a comprehensive assessment of the flooding was necessary to identify practical measures that could minimise the destruction caused by future floods.
He particularly called for attention to blocked waterways and drainage systems, which he said must be cleared to allow floodwaters to flow freely.
The Builsa North Municipal Chief Executive, Solomon Akogti, commended the MP for what he described as a timely intervention.
According to him, the relief support represented one of the quickest responses to flooding recorded in the municipality, noting that affected residents had received assistance within a short period following the disaster.
Akogti also commended NADMO personnel for their commitment to reaching affected communities despite the difficult conditions created by the floodwaters.
He urged NADMO to ensure that the relief items were properly accounted for and distributed promptly to the intended beneficiaries.
The Municipal NADMO Director, Joseph Azaayam, disclosed that the recent flooding was the third recorded in the municipality this year.
He said an assessment conducted by NADMO identified approximately 500 affected households involving 1,205 people.
Azaayam appealed to affected residents to remain patient as the distribution process gets underway.
He expressed appreciation to Agalga, the Ministry of the Interior, NADMO headquarters and other stakeholders for responding to the needs of residents affected by the floods.
He assured residents that registered beneficiaries would be considered in the distribution exercise and urged them to cooperate with NADMO officials throughout the process.
Azaayam further appealed to residents living in flood-prone areas to take preventive measures and support efforts aimed at building community resilience against future flooding.
