MP for Chiana-Paga pledges to expand educational support, assists 350 tertiary students

Nikyema Billa Alamzy increases tertiary student beneficiaries from 169 to 350 and targets 500 students for support in the next academic year.

The Member of Parliament for the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has pledged to expand his educational support programme to benefit more tertiary students in the constituency and help ease their financial burden.

The MP made the commitment during an engagement with about 350 tertiary students from various communities in the constituency at Paga on Monday, August 17, where each beneficiary received GH¢1,000, bringing the total support to GH¢350,000.

Addressing the students, Alamzy said the initiative was aimed at investing in the future of the youth through education.

“This is for your future. We have all been through where you are. Study and work hard for that future,” he urged.

Alamzy disclosed that through his share of the Common Fund, he supported 169 tertiary students last year, increasing the number to 350 this year.

He said his target was to support 500 students in the coming academic year, adding that students who were not selected this year would have another opportunity to benefit.

“Come next academic year, we are going to support 500 students, and those who did not make it this time will hopefully be part of it,” he said.

The MP also revealed that he had provided full scholarships to five students pursuing courses including medicine, law and engineering.

He pledged to expand the scholarship programme to support more students pursuing professional courses but facing financial difficulties.

Alamzy urged the beneficiaries to take their education seriously, avoid activities that could jeopardise their future and work hard to achieve their academic goals.

He described education as a cornerstone of both personal and community development.

The MP further assured the students that he had no personal involvement in the selection of beneficiaries, explaining that the process was conducted fairly, with beneficiaries selected from polling stations by community members.

The District Chief Executive for Kassena-Nankana West, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, urged the students to view the support as an investment in human resource development in the constituency.

He said the government was committed to investing in education through scholarship programmes, with an increasing number of students benefiting from such initiatives.

Akurugo disclosed that in 2025, 25 students applied for the district’s local scholarship programme, of whom 17 were successful after interviews and subsequently received financial support.

He said the number of applicants had increased to 57 this year, adding that the applicants had recently gone through the selection interviews.

The DCE cautioned the students against drug abuse and other behaviours that could undermine their education and future prospects.

He urged them to remain focused and committed to their studies so they could become successful and make their parents and the constituency proud.

The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the MP for the support, describing it as timely assistance that would help ease the financial challenges associated with their education.
