Celebrate teachers by making working environment conducive – GNAT Secretary

GNAT Secretary Bismark Asugbey Yakubu calls for better working conditions and resources to enable teachers to perform effectively.

Education stakeholders and duty bearers have been urged to demonstrate genuine appreciation for teachers by creating a conducive working environment that enables them to effectively perform their duties.

The call was made as Ghana joined the rest of the world to commemorate World Teachers’ Day on October 5.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday October 5, Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the “Kasena-Nankana District”, Bismark Asugbey Yakubu said celebrating teachers should go beyond public announcements and ceremonial activities to include practical measures aimed at improving their working conditions.

“Celebrating the teacher means making the teaching environment conducive for teachers to perform their tasks, not just street celebrations.”

Asugbey Yakubu highlighted inadequate teaching and learning materials, insufficient ICT and science laboratories, as well as poor remuneration, among other challenges as factors hindering effective teaching and learning.

He also cited the concerns raised by teacher unions, which contributed to the nationwide strike as legitimate issues that duty bearers must address to improve the welfare and working conditions of teachers.

“Let the cry of the teachers be the cry of society. We deserve what is ours.”

Touching on the theme for this year’s World Teachers’ Day celebration, “Empowering Teachers: Architects of the Future,” Asugbey Yakubu emphasized the critical role teachers play in shaping the future of society.

He noted that the quality of society is, to a large extent, a reflection of the quality of teachers and the environment in which they operate.

“We mould society and society becomes reflective of who the teacher is.”
