Jonathan Alua and friends launch scholarship and mentorship scheme in Navrongo

The Emmanuel Alua Memorial Excellence and Mentorship Scheme will support students with educational assistance and career guidance, beginning at Presbyterian Junior High School in Navrongo.

Lawyer Jonathan Alua and his friends have launched the Emmanuel Alua Memorial Excellence and Mentorship Scheme (EAMEMS) to support academic excellence and provide career guidance for students, beginning with Presbyterian Junior High School in Navrongo.

The scheme was launched on Friday October 23, at the school in honour of Jonathan Alua’s late younger brother, Emmanuel Alua, who attended the institution and graduated as the best student in his year.

Speaking at the launch, Lawyer Alua said the initiative was inspired by both his brother’s legacy and the opportunity to help young people pursue their ambitions with financial support and professional guidance.

He explained that the mentorship component would connect students with professionals in their fields of interest, helping them understand career options and prepare for their future.

The scheme is starting at Presbyterian Junior High School, where the founders have personal ties, but the team plans to expand it across the municipality.

As part of the launch, the organisers announced financial support for Salome, a former student of the school who is now attending Methodist Senior High School. The assistance is intended to support her education, with the team hoping to continue helping her through senior high school and potentially tertiary education.

A friend of Lawyer Alua, speaking on behalf of the team, said the organisers had decided to support Salome despite her aggregate of 18, rather than make the initially considered grade a strict condition for assistance.

Headmistress Felicia Atine Akugiri said Presbyterian Junior High School had 191 students: 81 in Form One, 59 in Form Two and 51 in Form Three. She noted that rising enrolment had led the school to introduce two streams for Form One.

She encouraged students to take advantage of the initiative by applying the lessons and guidance they received to their studies.

The launch ended with a vote of thanks by the school’s Senior Prefect, Alhassan Hibatullah, who seized the opportunity to expressed appreciation to the team and urged her colleagues to study harder.

Following the launch, Lawyer Jonathan Alua and his friends donated a television set to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office in Navrongo.

The team said they had learnt that the facility did not have a television and believed the donation would provide entertainment for customers while they waited to access services.

Staff of the Navrongo DVLA office received the team warmly and expressed gratitude for the gesture.

The two activities reflect the group’s efforts to honour Emmanuel Alua’s memory through educational support, mentorship and community service.
