Armed robbers kill police officer in attack on Zebilla–Widnaba road

The Upper East Regional Police Command says it has launched an investigation into an armed robbery attack.

The Ghana Police Service has announced that one of its officers was shot during a shootout with armed robbers along the Zebilla–Widnaba in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

In an official release by the Ghana Police Service on Monday, February 9, 2026, the Police say to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, when two police officers travelling towards Zebilla encountered a robbery in progress.

“The robbers opened fire on the officers, hitting one of them in the process.” The statement said.

The statement added that a police response team, dispatched to the scene after a distress call, rushed the injured officer to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. However, the officer was pronounced dead on arrival. The body has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The Upper East Regional Police Command says it has launched an investigation into an armed robbery attack.

The statement added that the Police Command says a special operation is currently underway to identify and arrest all individuals involved in the attack so they can face the full rigours of the law.
