Bad Roads Negatively Impacting Tono Irrigation Scheme – ICOUR

According to Sebastian Achibase, an Irrigation Engineer with the Irrigation Company of Upper East, the state of roads within the scheme is a significant hindrance to activities of both management and farmers.

Deplorable roads are a major challenge in maximizing the benefits of the Tono Irrigation Scheme (TIS), one of West Africa’s largest Irrigation Dams managed by the Irrigation Company of Upper East (ICOUR)  in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region.

According to Sebastian Achibase, an Irrigation Engineer with the Irrigation Company of Upper East, the state of roads within the scheme is a significant hindrance to activities of both management and farmers.

“Both primary and secondary roads within the scheme are in a terrible state, affecting transportation of farm produce and monitoring by management.” Achibase said.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday April 15, 2025, he underscored that, poor road conditions have contributed to high transport charges, burdening farmers under the Irrigation Scheme.

Achibase revealed that ICOUR has engaged Deputy Food and Agriculture Minister, John Dumelo on the road infrastructure challenges and is hopeful for immediate government intervention.

He further emphasized the contribution of the Tono Irrigation Scheme to Ghana’s food security and employment, noting that the scheme currently has 2,993 registered farmers, of whom 455 are women, with the majority of men being youth.
