Bawumia calls for discontinuation of prosecutions of Agona West NDC organiser over false claims
Former Vice President says political disagreements should be addressed through dialogue and truth, not arrests, as he urges authorities to end the prosecution.
The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the prosecution of an organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Agona West, who is facing charges for allegedly publishing false news and making offensive comments about him.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 22, Dr. Bawumia stated that he neither lodged a complaint against the individual nor authorised any prosecution to be carried out in his name.
According to the statement, Dr. Bawumia does not support the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian over comments made about him, stressing that he has consistently endured insults and false allegations throughout his public life without resorting to the use of state institutions to silence critics.
He maintained that the appropriate response to offensive speech is “better speech,” while falsehoods should be countered with the truth rather than arrests, court proceedings, or what he described as harsh bail conditions imposed on ordinary citizens.
The former Vice President therefore appealed to the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the ongoing prosecution and any similar actions purportedly undertaken on his behalf.
He also called for the immediate release of the accused to enable him to return to his family and livelihood.
Dr. Bawumia further emphasised that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens, including political opponents, are able to express their views freely without fear of persecution.
He concluded by stating that he forgives the accused, wishes him well, and urged political actors across the country to focus their efforts on addressing the pressing concerns of the Ghanaian people rather than engaging in divisive political attacks.
