The Member of Parliament for the Bongo Constituency, Charles Bawa-Dua, has organised a Unity Cup football tournament aimed at promoting unity, peace, and talent development among the youth in the district.
The tournament forms part of activities by the MP during the parliamentary recess, a period set aside for Members of Parliament to engage closely with their constituents.
According to Bawa-Dua, the primary objective of the competition is to bring young footballers together from across the constituency and identify talented players to form a strong and competitive district team.
The Bongo MP, who is also the founder of Samba Stars Football Club in Bongo-Beo, recalled his long involvement in football development.
He noted that Samba Stars rose from the Third Division to the Second Division and later qualified for the National Division One League, demonstrating what structured support and commitment can achieve.
The Unity Cup tournament involves teams drawn from all zones within the constituency, including the Bongo, Bro, Feo, Soe, Zorko, Namoo, Valley, and Balungu zones.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Lawyer Bawa-Dua said the Bongo District currently has four divisional teams and has the potential to establish a solid district team, similar to the former Bongo Unity team, which represented the Upper East Region in the Division One League about a decade ago.
He assured participants and football lovers that the Unity Cup will be organised annually, stressing his commitment to sustained youth and sports development in the constituency.
The MP further expressed confidence that some of the players discovered through the tournament could go on to represent the district, the region, and even the nation in the future.
