Corruption and poor governance eroding patriotism – Apaabey Baba

Apaabey lamented that the growing disinterest of citizens in national issues is a direct reflection of how corruption and poor leadership have eroded trust in public institutions.

Former Upper East Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), P.P. Apaabey Baba, has expressed deep concern over the increasing levels of apathy and decline in patriotism among Ghanaians, attributing the trend to corruption and weak governance systems.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday November 6, Apaabey lamented that the growing disinterest of citizens in national issues is a direct reflection of how corruption and poor leadership have eroded trust in public institutions.

Events that are ongoing in this country are affecting citizens to a level that they have become apathetic. When you hear the levels of corruption or perceived corruption that are being exposed and they are not made to pay back, people lose the zeal to work for the country.”

He noted that despite its crucial mandate to promote civic awareness, the NCCE continues to struggle with inadequate funding and logistical support, a situation that has severely limited its ability to reach and educate citizens on their civic responsibilities.

The NCCE has become impoverished, where are the tools to work with? They don’t have. They only have the human resources in all districts, but the physical resources are not there.”

According to him, the weakening of civic engagement has led to a breakdown in citizens’ sense of responsibility toward the state, resulting in a lack of public participation in governance and accountability processes.

Apaabey therefore urged government to prioritize the reintroduction of civic education at all levels of the country’s education system to help rebuild national consciousness and instill civic values in the younger generation.

He emphasized that reviving civic education would not only promote responsible citizenship but also strengthen democratic participation and good governance.
