Filson Awankua calls for pardon for 16 sanctioned members of NPP in Upper East

Awankua warned that the disciplinary action could deepen divisions within the party, which is already grappling with internal disunity and poor electoral performance in the region.

An aspiring Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Filson Apambila Awankua, has expressed concern over what he describes as overly harsh sanctions imposed on 16 party officials in the region.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday, August 5, Awankua warned that the disciplinary action could deepen divisions within the party, which is already grappling with internal disunity and poor electoral performance in the region.

“The number one challenge I will say is disunity. The party has not been able to get someone who will bring us together. We have too many divisions and interests, but what we can do is to manage them.” He stated.

Awankua noted that the region currently holds no parliamentary seats for the NPP, describing the situation as dire and requiring reconciliation rather than punitive action.

“This is a party which is already limping in the region with zero seats. I plead that my brother Lawyer Tony and his team, in trying to implement the recommendations of the Disciplinary Committee, show mercy.”  Awankua said.

“If we are able to manage these people, it will add to our advantage. We can sit down and talk. The sanctions are too harsh.” He added.

Awankua, who is seeking a chance to lead the regional block of the party, is campaigning on a platform of unity, grassroots empowerment, and renewed energy for party activities in the region.

The 16 sanctioned party members from the Pusiga and Tempane constituencies were cited for misconduct and anti-party activities during the 2024 general elections. The sanctions, endorsed by the Regional Executive Committee, have sparked mixed reactions within party ranks.
