GACC sensitises residents of Kassena-Nankana West District on OSP mandate and corruption fight
The sensitisation programme in Paga forms part of a broader regional outreach by GACC teams, which are simultaneously engaging communities in other parts of the Upper East Region, including Bongo, Nabdam, and Bolgatanga.
The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has organised a citizen sensitisation forum in Paga in the Kassena-Nankana West District, as part of efforts to deepen public understanding of the mandate of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and strengthen the national fight against corruption.
The event, which forms part of the European Union-funded project “Strengthening Accountability, Strengthening the Fight Against Corruption” and being implemented through GIZ, brought together community members and civil society actors to deliberate on how to enhance transparency and accountability at the district level.

Speaking in an interview with Mike FM, the Programme Officer at GACC, Dorcas Affum Tenkorang explained that the initiative aims to educate citizens on the OSP’s role and empower them to actively participate in the fight against corruption.
“This project has been implemented in 60 districts across all 16 regions in Ghana, and Kassena-Nankana West is one of them. Today, we’ve learnt about corruption, its various forms and manifestations, and most importantly, about the OSP and its laws,” she stated.
She further explained that the establishment of the OSP in 2018 was part of Ghana’s commitment to international treaties that require the creation of an independent and specialised institution to tackle corruption and related offences.
“We want to create awareness for people to understand the mandate of the OSP and to appreciate the work that they are doing. The OSP is an independent body, and if citizens understand and support their work, we will make greater progress in the fight against corruption,” she emphasised.
According to Tenkorang, the engagement will be followed by public education campaigns through local media, including a discussion on Mike FM, to ensure that those who could not attend the forum also benefit.
“We are also going on public campaigns through media stations. So from here, we will also be doing public education at Mike FM the next day.”

One of the participants, Raphael Pareyewe Kupanamo, in an interview expressed appreciation for the session, noting that it provided valuable insights into the operations of the OSP and dispelled misconceptions about the institution.
“Actually, when we came, we had a lot to listen to, how the Special Prosecutor started and the number of things he has been doing” He said.
