The Janania Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS), under the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Health Directorate, has organised a food demonstration event aimed at promoting healthy eating and combating malnutrition in the municipality.
The outreach programme, held in the Janania community on Friday, June 27, focused on encouraging the consumption of balanced diets using locally available foods, with particular emphasis on improving the nutrition of pregnant women and children under five.
Led by the Municipal Health Directorate’s nutrition team, the initiative brought together community members to prepare and showcase over 20 varieties of traditional Ghanaian dishes and beverages.
Among the foods prepared were Zoom Kom, Tubaani, Bambara beans, and Tuo Zaafi, all made with simple, locally sourced ingredients and under strict hygienic standards.

Abdul Aziz Seidu, a nutrition officer for the sub-district, shed light on the importance of the exercise.
“We are educating the people of Janania on how to achieve a balanced diet by using locally available foods to help prevent malnutrition, especially in children under five,” he said.
“This program also serves to revive traditional food staples that are being forgotten despite their high nutritional value.” he added.
The demonstration not only focused on nutrition but also served as a platform to reinforce the cultural significance of local foods and their role in long-term health.
Monica Atogombasiya, a member of the Janania Community Health Committee and a participant in the programme, praised the initiative.
She also expressed concern over the younger generation’s growing disinterest in traditional foods, arguing that these meals are essential for healthier growth compared to many modern dishes.

More than 20 varieties of traditional dishes and beverages, including Zoom Kom, Tubaani, Bambara beans, and Tuo Zaafi, were prepared under strict hygienic conditions as part of the exercise.
