Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly to begin major decongestion exercise in Navrongo on April 9

In a public notice issued by the Assembly, authorities stated that the exercise is targeted at traders, drivers, shop owners, push truck owners, transport operators, and all road users urging them to comply with newly outlined directives ahead of the enforcement on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly (KNMA) has officially announced an impending decongestion exercise within the Navrongo Central Business District, aimed at restoring order, improving traffic flow, and enhancing public safety.

In a public notice issued by the Assembly, authorities stated that the exercise is targeted at traders, drivers, shop owners, push truck owners, transport operators, and all road users urging them to comply with newly outlined directives ahead of the enforcement on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

The initiative seeks to improve the free flow of traffic, enhance sanitation, reduce accidents, and promote safety and orderliness within the municipality.

The exercise will cover key areas across Navrongo, including the stretch from the Fire Service Station to War Memorial Hospital through to UTAS, the Navrongo–Bolgatanga road, Navrongo Station, Cinema Palace road, as well as the New and Old Markets and surrounding roads.

The directives from the assembly include, no selling on roads and pavements, no offloading of goods by long vehicles during the daytime. Offloading will only be allowed at night, no parking of vehicles and motorbikes along the roadside, no selling of clothes and other goods using push trucks either on the roads, pavements or in the lorry station and traders at the new market currently selling on the roadside are to relocate to the inner parts of the market.

The rest are, all containers that have encroached the drains are to reduce their containers by a minimum of 2 meters away from the drain, containers wrongly placed on roads and road reservations will be removed if not found to be in compliance  with the 2 meter buffer from the drains, no selling on roads and pavements, no parking of vehicles and motorbikes along the roadside and long vehicles will be restricted from offloading goods during the daytime, with such activities only permitted at night.

KNMA emphasized that non-compliance will attract sanctions, including fines ranging from GH¢500 to GH¢1500 for long vehicles, GH¢100 to GH¢200 for small cars, and GH¢20 to GH¢50 for motorbikes. Roadside sellers will also face penalties, while confiscated push trucks would be destroyed and used as scraps according to the notice.

“This exercise is not intended to punish anyone or take away people’s livelihood but to promote peace, safety, and smooth business activities within Navrongo.” The statement noted.

The Assembly also called on the public to cooperate fully with authorities and security agencies to ensure a smooth and successful implementation of the exercise.
