Kassena-Nankana West Assembly commissions DACF-funded projects, urges proper maintenance

The Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly has commissioned and handed over a number of projects funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to selected educational and health institutions and communities in the district.

The projects include solar-powered mechanised boreholes for Paga Senior High School, Chiana Senior High School, Sirigu Senior High School and Zenga Community; maternity blocks for the Mirigu and Nakongo communities; staff quarters at the Kayoro Health Centre; a renovated primary school and staff quarters at Bugsongo; and a newly constructed Junior High School at Dazongo.

The projects form part of the Assembly’s efforts to improve access to basic social infrastructure and enhance the quality of education and healthcare delivery across the district.

Speaking at a short ceremony at Paga Senior High School on Thursday, August 6, to commission and hand over the solar-powered mechanised borehole, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kassena-Nankana West, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to improving infrastructure at the school.

He said the Assembly had already supported the school in several areas, including the provision of streetlights and potable water, and would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to address its infrastructural needs.

Akurugo urged the students to remain focused on their studies despite the challenges confronting the school.

“Take your studies seriously despite the challenges you face here. You can get better results from here just like your other colleagues in Grade A schools.”

He disclosed that a number of schools had been earmarked for upgrading and said most schools with E-block facilities had been considered for the exercise, with Paga Senior High School among the institutions selected.

He further urged the students to remain disciplined and respect the directives of school authorities, while commending teachers and management for their dedication to the development of the school.

Akurugo pledged the Assembly’s continued collaboration with relevant partners to support development initiatives at the school.

The Member of Parliament for the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, also pledged his support towards improving infrastructure at Paga Senior High School.

He said he had taken a special interest in the development of the school and was committed to supporting the renovation of parts of the school that were affected by fire several years ago, as well as the construction of a main entrance gate.

“I will make sure that the building will be renovated this year and we’ll construct an entrance for the school out of the resources I get from my educational fund.”

The MP urged the students to remain focused on their education while government, the Assembly, school authorities and other stakeholders worked together to address the school’s infrastructural challenges.

Authorities of Paga Senior High School expressed appreciation to the Assembly for providing the mechanised borehole, describing it as an important intervention that would improve water supply and support teaching and learning.

They, however, renewed calls for the school to be absorbed into the boarding system, arguing that this would help improve learning outcomes and provide a more conducive environment for students.

The school authorities also appealed for the completed E-block structure to be released to the school to help accommodate the growing number of students while awaiting its official commissioning.

Authorities of the beneficiary schools and leaders of the communities where the various projects were executed also expressed gratitude to the Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly for the interventions.

They appealed for additional development projects to address other pressing needs in their respective institutions and communities.

The Assembly, meanwhile, urged beneficiary institutions and communities to take proper care of the facilities to ensure their sustainability and maximise the benefits of the investments.
