Kassena-Nankana West DCE calls for active public participation in monthly national sanitation exercise
Kassena-Nankana West DCE warns that shops may be locked and fined for refusing to participate in monthly sanitation exercise.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, has called on residents to actively participate in the Monthly National Sanitation Exercise to help keep Paga and surrounding communities clean.
Speaking at the end of the nationwide sanitation exercise held in Paga on Saturday, August 1, Akurugo described the initiative as an important national programme that requires the commitment and cooperation of every resident.
He commended the large number of participants who turned out to support the exercise but expressed concern over the refusal of some residents to take part.
He warned that the Assembly would begin enforcing sanctions against individuals and businesses that fail to participate.
According to the DCE, the Assembly will lock up shops that remain open during the sanitation exercise, as well as those whose owners deliberately close their shops to avoid participating.
“I have asked our officers to prepare a memo for the procurement of padlocks so that those who intentionally lock their shops and refuse to clean their frontages will have additional padlocks placed on them. They will only gain access to the keys after paying a fine to the Assembly,” he stated.
The exercise involved sweeping streets, clearing refuse, and desilting gutters along the principal streets of Paga, stretching from the Old Assembly Block towards the border, as well as the central market and other surrounding areas.
Akurugo praised market women, traders, political party executives, Assembly staff and personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service and Ghana National Fire Service for their active participation, which contributed to the success of the exercise.
The Kajelo Brass Band added excitement to the clean-up by entertaining participants with lively musical performances that kept them motivated throughout the exercise. Many participants were seen dancing to the rhythmic tunes while carrying out the clean-up activities.
The Monthly National Sanitation Exercise is a government initiative observed on the first Saturday of every month across all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to promote environmental cleanliness and improve public health across the country.
