The District Education Director for Kassena-Nankana West, George Woyongo, has been asked to step aside to allow for investigations into allegations of misconduct and incompetence.
This decision follows a massive protest by teachers in the district on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
The striking teachers, who are members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), had demanded Woyongo’s removal, citing multiple grievances.
Their protest brought academic activities to a standstill, despite efforts by local authorities to persuade them to call off their strike.
Following the demonstration, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education intervened, leading to the decision to suspend Woyongo pending investigations by a committee.
The protesting teachers had accused the director of arbitrary transfers, promotions, and disciplinary actions without following due process, mismanagement of district education resources and neglecting teacher welfare.
With Woyongo stepping aside, the teachers have since returned to the classroom, expressing hope that the investigation will bring a lasting resolution to their concerns.
The Member of Parliament for Kassena-Nankana West, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, issued a statement on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, confirming that he had engaged the Minister of Education on measures to address the teachers’ concerns and ensure stability in the district’s education sector.
The outcome of the investigation into Woyongo’s conduct is now eagerly awaited as stakeholders push for fairness and accountability in the management of education in the district.
