Language is a currency for transactions – Counsellor Akansuke

According to him, language is more than a collection of words, it is a tool for connection and a marker of identity.

Counsellor Martin Amaletiga Akansuke says language as a powerful currency that enables people to build relationships, create opportunities and navigate social and professional spaces.

Akansuke speaking on Voices of Change on Mike FM said the ability to communicate effectively and speak multiple languages determines how far individuals can go in connecting with others.

“I’m saying that language is a currency because, depending on your ability to communicate and the number of languages you are exposed to, it tells how far you will go and network with people,”

“When you communicate effectively, you spend words to gain trust, build relationships or achieve goals. It is a valuable tool for navigating social and professional spaces.” He added

According to him, language is more than a collection of words, it is a tool for connection and a marker of identity.

He noted that people often connect through words even before they meet physically, stressing that language plays a crucial ro]le in shaping relationships and interactions.

Akansuke further emphasised the immense power of language, saying it can either heal or harm depending on how it is used.

“Language is so powerful that life and death are in it. When used carefully, it can heal and negotiate peace, but when used carelessly it can spark conflict and destroy valuable relationships,” he said.

He warned that miscommunication could lead to chaos and misunderstanding, while thoughtful communication could foster peace and cooperation.

Akansuke advised couples who do not share the same language to intentionally create an environment that allows their children to learn their native languages.

He explained that children have a natural ability to learn multiple languages simultaneously, making it easier for them to grow up multilingual if given the opportunity.

The counsellor also highlighted the many benefits of multilingualism, noting that individuals who speak several languages often enjoy broader career opportunities and are in high demand globally.

He said multilingualism helps bridge cultural gaps and strengthens relationships among people from diverse backgrounds.

“When you speak someone’s language, they relate to you better. It helps you get things done faster because people identify you as one of their own, speaking multiple languages also prevents negative prejudices and stereotyping.”
