SNV Provides Water facility in Builsa South to support pastoral mobility under MOPPS project

This initiative falls under the Peaceful Cross-Border Pastoral Mobility and Social Stability in the Sahel (MOPPS) project, aimed at enhancing the resilience of pastoralists facing climate change and resource scarcity.

In a significant boost to pastoral communities, SNV Netherlands Development Organisation commissioned a new water facility in Weisi, a community in the Builsa South District of Ghana’s Upper East Region. This initiative falls under the peaceful cross-border pastoral Mobility and Social Stability in the Sahel (MOPPS) project, aimed at enhancing the resilience of pastoralists facing climate change and resource scarcity.

The MOPPS project, a collaboration between SNV, RBM, APESS, ROPPA, Rural Hub, and CARE Denmark, is funded by Sida, SDC, and Danida. It tackles challenges faced by Sahel pastoral communities, where demographic growth, climate change, and limited agricultural productivity strain resources.

Weisi is a crucial destination for pastoralists migrating to Ghana for short stays. The new water facility will provide a reliable source for both livestock and the local community, easing tensions over access and promoting peaceful co-existence.

During the commissioning ceremony on October 29, 2025, Naab Raphael Abuntori Apunwen, Chief of the Weisi Traditional Area, expressed gratitude, stating ‘this is not only a water facility but a source that will unite us as a community.”

He assured stakeholders that the community would safeguard the facility through a dedicated management committee.

Anne Musah-Akanko, the District Chief Executive, emphasized the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for farmers and livestock Producers.

“Access to water remains a pillar for both the community and pastoralists since water is life,” she stated, highlighting the facility’s importance for peace and development.

The MOPPS project aims to improve cross-border collaboration, promote sustainable resource management, and enhance social cohesion in the Sahel region. At Weisi, the water facility represents a step towards these goals, offering a sustainable solution to water scarcity and fostering a more secure and prosperous future for pastoral communities.
