Link-Ghana supports women groups with VSLA boxes to promote savings culture

The initiative aims to empower women financially by providing a simple, community-based alternative to formal banking systems, which often present barriers such as strict collateral requirements.

Link-Ghana, a non-governmental organization, in collaboration with the Kassena Nankana Municipal Assembly, has presented 20 Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) boxes to women’s groups within the municipality to promote a strong savings culture and improve access to community-level microloans.

The presentation ceremony, held on Friday, November 14 at the Kassena Nankana Municipal Assembly Hall, brought together representatives of women’s groups from communities including Pungu-Telania, Balobia, Bonia, Gia, and Nogsenia. Each group received a VSLA box, star stickers, passbooks, padlocks, and material purses for securing their savings.

Speaking to the media during the event, Project Coordinator for Link-Ghana, Daniel Kansake, said the initiative aims to empower women financially by providing a simple, community-based alternative to formal banking systems, which often present barriers such as strict collateral requirements.

“This is a community-based financial inclusion and empowerment programme designed to help women become financially independent,” he explained. “Many women are unable to access bank loans due to collateral challenges. But with the VSLA model, members save what they can on a weekly basis, and all records are properly documented and secured in the box.”

Kansake added that the approach has helped many women expand their businesses, support their households, and fund the education of their children. He noted that Link-Ghana’s support is driven by the positive results the VSLA concept continues to produce in communities.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Link-Ghana and the Municipal Assembly, describing the support as timely and impactful.

“This support will greatly benefit me, my group, and even our families,” said one participant. It will help us make small weekly savings, which in turn will boost our petty trading and farming activities. It will also enable us to grant small loans to members who may need help to pay their children’s school fees or meet other urgent needs.”

The intervention is expected to strengthen women’s economic participation and improve household financial stability across the Kassena Nankana Municipality.
