Mahama benefited from unsavoury comments – Dr. Samuel Akonga

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team in the Upper East Region, Dr. Samuel Akonga, has alleged that President John Mahama’s electoral success was aided by unsavoury comments and hate speech directed at political opponents.
His comments follow a staged protest by the NPP youth wing dubbed, “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna” against what it terms selective justice targeting its members by state security agencies.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday September 24, Dr. Akonga claimed that verbal attacks from individuals such as Kevin Taylor and some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) played a significant role in shaping the political atmosphere that benefitted President Mahama.
“ We have a president who said if you come out and criticise him or you come out and say something that is a claim to be unsavoury comments your IP address will be tracked wherever you are hiding and arrest you and what surprises me is that he was the same individual is a beneficiary of what he’s trying to keep. You have Kevin Taylor who has insulted almost everybody for him.” He said
Dr. Akonga further accused the NDC of having what he described as a long history of human rights violations, dating back to the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era.
“I know the NDC to be a party that has disregard to the 1992 constitution. I also knew of the NDC to be a party that suppresses the fundamental human rights of Ghanaians,”
“The current President said when it comes to violence they the NDC are headmasters to paraphrase him, when it comes to violence and we know how the NDC metamorphosis from the PNDC to NDC.” He added
Akonga also spoke against political intimidation, assuring that the NPP haven learn from their previous mistake would not pursue acts of vengeance against opposition members in the next NPP government.
He also condemned voices within the NPP who have suggested that the party should retaliate by suppressing opponents when next in power.
“We shouldn’t build a country by ensuring that we play the vindictive cards, it is not the best. Let us see how we can collectively build this country. If this government is doing something and we are in opposition, crying foul, why should we come to power and also repeat the same, then what is the principle behind our demonstration in opposition.”
