Mary Awusi should have been fired even before apologies — Elvis Darko

Elvis Darko calls for the dismissal of Free Zones CEO Mary Awusi, criticizing the government’s response as inadequate and warning it could set a bad precedent.

Editor of NewsCenta, Elvis Darko, has called for the dismissal of Mary Awusi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, describing the government’s response to her controversial galamsey-related comments as misplaced and ineffective.

Reacting to the ongoing controversy, Darko criticized what he termed as a cosmetic approach by authorities, particularly following reports that the Chief of Staff had publicly apologized over the matter.

“The first action should be that the woman should be fired.” Darko stressed

Darko further took issue with the Chief of Staff’s reported emotional apology in a church setting, describing it as inappropriate given the circumstances.

“You have not even fired her, and you are crying on her behalf.” He said.

He also criticized the nature of Awusi’s apology, suggesting that it lacked full admission of wrongdoing.

“She said if the chairman and his people felt that what she said was wrong, then she apologizes. That means in her mind, she does not believe she has done anything wrong.” He argued.

Darko warned that failure to act decisively could embolden other public officials to engage in similar conduct, knowing that consequences may be minimal.

“If this is how we respond, then others may think they can misbehave and still remain in office while someone else apologizes on their behalf.” He cautioned.
