NADMO urges caution along White Volta as Bagre Dam undertakes controlled spillage on August 27
Development partners and local authorities have also been called upon to support efforts aimed at minimizing the impact of potential flooding on lives and property.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued an urgent public alert ahead of the controlled spillage of the Bagre Dam by authorities in Burkina Faso.
According to an official communication from Sonabel, Burkina Faso’s power utility company, the spillage is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, following a rapid rise in the water level of the dam, which reached 234.27 metres as of August 23, 2025.
The spillage is a routine safety measure aimed at preventing the dam from exceeding its holding capacity. However, the release of excess water is expected to significantly raise the water levels in the White Volta River, posing a flood risk to downstream communities in Ghana.
NADMO’s Upper East Regional Directorate is therefore urging all residents living along the White Volta basin to take immediate precautionary steps, including moving to higher ground and safeguarding personal belongings.
Development partners and local authorities have also been called upon to support efforts aimed at minimizing the impact of potential flooding on lives and property.
Communities at High Risk Include: Pwalugu, Zebilla, Bawku, Bolgatanga low-lying areas, and other settlements along the White Volta River
A statement from NADMO emphasized that; “We wish to notify the general public, residents, farmers, and fisherfolk in the affected zones to stay alert and heed evacuation notices as necessary. Preparedness is key to reducing disaster impact.”
An updated technical report from Sonabel on the current state of the dam and the spillage schedule has been received and shared with relevant authorities in Ghana.
NADMO stresses the urgency of this notice and calls on all stakeholders, including the media, to support in spreading awareness to save lives and property.
