Navro-Pio leads call to action at launch of Tree for Life initiative
Meanwhile, George Boamey, the Navrongo District Forest Services Manager, has disclosed that the Forestry Commission has set an ambitious target to plant 180,000 tree seedlings in the Navrongo District alone.
The Overlord of the Navrongo Traditional Area, Navro-Pio Pe Asagpaare Aneakwoah Balinia Adda II, has led a passionate call for environmental stewardship, during the official commemoration of the Tree for Life Initiative by the Navrongo District Forest Services Division on Thursday, May 5.
Held at the premises of the Municipal Assembly, the ceremony brought together government representatives, security agencies, schoolchildren, and residents, in a tree planting exercise to restore the area’s green cover and safeguard the environment.
Delivering his address, Pe Asagpaare reminded the gathering that trees are not merely part of the landscape, but the very foundation of life itself.
“Trees are the lungs of the earth. They purify our air, shade our homes, and protect our watersheds. Every tree planted is a promise to our children and grandchildren that we care about their future,” He said.
Drawing on deep cultural roots, the Navro-Pio highlighted the spiritual and traditional significance of trees in Ghanaian society. He called on chiefs, elders, youth leaders, schools, and faith groups to take the initiative beyond ceremonial planting and to lead sustained action.
“Our ancestors prayed under sacred trees. Trees are part of our identity. Yet today, we are witnessing a painful reality: our forests are disappearing. Let me be clear that when we destroy trees, we destroy ourselves.” He warned.
The Tree for Life Initiative, an initiative by the government with collaborative support from the Forestry Commission, aims to combat deforestation, restore degraded lands, and promote climate resilience through community-based tree planting campaigns.
The Navro-Pio extended special gratitude to the youth and schoolchildren in attendance, calling them the true champions of restoration. He urged all community members to green their homes, schools, farms, and roadsides, and to revive cultural practices that once protected sacred groves and native species.
The ceremony ended with a symbolic tree planting by the Navro-Pio, members of the state security agencies, the media, heads of departments and students of the Our Lady of Lourdes Girls Senior High School, among others.

Meanwhile, George Boamey, the Navrongo District Forest Services Manager, has disclosed that the Forestry Commission has set an ambitious target to plant 180,000 tree seedlings in the Navrongo District alone.
He stated that the tree-planting effort is a key component of the country’s reforestation strategy aimed at combating climate change and land degradation.
He, therefore, urged community members to not only plant trees but also nurture and protect them, ensuring that they thrive to maturity.
