The Member of Parliament (MP) for Navrongo Central, Simon Akibenge Aworigo, has extended financial assistance totaling GH₵600,000 to 300 students in the constituency to support their education.
The beneficiaries comprise 249 tertiary students and 47 senior high school students, each receiving GH₵2,000. The support was disbursed from the MP’s share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).
Speaking at a brief presentation ceremony held on Thursday, November 27, at the St. Patrick’s Hall in Navrongo, Aworigo said the gesture fulfils his promise to champion initiatives that promote access to quality education in the constituency.
“I made a promise to support as many people as possible to achieve their full potential and become whoever they want to be. Long before becoming a Member of Parliament, I supported many students. I campaigned on the belief that, as MP, I would be able to help even more people pursue education. Today is a fulfilment of that promise, and it is just the beginning.” He said.
Aworigo highlighted Navrongo’s longstanding reputation as an educational hub that has produced many distinguished individuals serving the nation. He said sustaining this legacy requires deliberate investment in young people who will, in turn, contribute to the constituency’s development.
Addressing concerns about the selection process, the MP explained that the criteria for qualification were transparent, open, and non-partisan.
“It was an open process. A team was set up to review all applications. We invited students who had gained admission or were in the process of securing admission but genuinely could not pay their fees to apply. If the review team found you qualified, regardless of political affiliation, you received the support.” He clarified.
Aworigo added that the initiative is part of broader educational interventions he is pursuing, including helping students access GETFund opportunities and facilitating new scholarship schemes, particularly for those interested in STEM-related programmes.
He urged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity.
“Take your studies seriously, excel, and be in a position to help others in the future,” he encouraged.
Some beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude to the MP, noting that the financial support would significantly ease the burden of their educational expenses.
