NDC deceived Ghanaians on illegal mining fight – NPP’s Hilliary Aniakwo Alleges

According to Aniakwo, the NDC, led by President John Mahama, used the issue of illegal mining as a major campaign tool against the NPP in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.

Hilliary Aniakwo, a Communications Team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Chiana-Paga Constituency, has lashed out at the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of deceiving Ghanaians about their commitment to ending illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

According to Aniakwo, the NDC, led by President John Mahama, used the issue of illegal mining as a major campaign tool against the NPP in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.

He claims that after assuming office, the NDC has shown a lack of seriousness in tackling the menace.

“NDC is a scam because they pushed an agenda that the NPP failed to solve illegal mining, a clear social canker, and today they are in charge and would rather deport foreigners instead of prosecuting them here in Ghana,” Aniakwo stated.

His remarks were made during an appearance on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, April 11, 2025, where he responded to recent comments by Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka.

The Minister had revealed that the government had resolved to deport foreigners engaged in illegal mining activities to face prosecution in their home countries.

Aniakwo condemned the decision, saying it reflects a lack of genuine interest in dealing with the galamsey issue. He urged the NDC to “man up” and demonstrate the same zeal in fighting illegal mining as they did while in opposition.

He further called on the government to adopt stricter measures, including prosecuting foreign offenders locally, to show their commitment to protecting the country’s natural resources and environment.
