NDC’s Carl Maadi alleges NPP’s nomination fees aim to favour Bawumia
Maadi criticised the nomination fee, calling it outrageous and alleging that it serves as a financial barrier designed to discourage other prospective candidates from entering the race.
Carl Maadi, a Communications Team Member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised concerns over what he describes as a calculated move by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to edge out competition and secure the party’s 2028 presidential ticket for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The NPP on Monday, July 29, officially opened nominations for its upcoming presidential primaries, with aspirants expected to pay a nomination form fee of GH¢ 100,000 and a filing fee of GH¢ 500,000.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday July 31, Maadi criticised the nomination fee, calling it outrageous and alleging that it serves as a financial barrier designed to discourage other prospective candidates from entering the race.
“The amount is a bit outrageous; this is a way to actually reduce the number of candidates, and from the way they parade themselves, it is to actually to give Bawumia the chance.”
Maadi further argued that the party’s decision to hold an early primary is part of a broader strategy to consolidate support around Dr. Bawumia through the current delegates, who are mostly Bawumia supporters.
“The usual thing is they hold the constituency, regional, and national elections before they vote for the candidate, but this time around, they are saying that those who voted for Bawumia last two years for him to become the flagbearer, they should rather stay in office and vote for him again.” Maadi added.
The NPP is expected to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026. Its former General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong and Former Assin Central Member of Parliament have already officially declared their intention to contest in the presidential primaries since the opening of nominations yesterday.
