NHIA targets 80% national health insurance coverage for Ghanaians – Deputy Director

Deputy Director Blandina Martin Awiah Norman urges Ghanaians to enroll on the NHIS as the Authority pushes toward universal health coverage and expanded access to primary healthcare.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has set a target of achieving 80 percent nationwide health insurance coverage as part of efforts to expand access to healthcare and improve public health outcomes across the country.

The Deputy Director in charge of Membership and Regional Operations at the NHIA, Blandina Martin Awiah Norman, disclosed this during a market outreach exercise organised by the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Office of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) at the Navrongo New Market.

The initiative formed part of an ongoing public sensitisation campaign on the NHIS free registration and renewal waiver currently being implemented by the Scheme. The exercise, which began on April 15, is expected to end on May 31.

Speaking in an interview with Mike FM, Norman said outreach programmes such as the market tour are critical to increasing enrollment and improving the Scheme’s national coverage.

“We have national teams monitoring our district offices because they are the implementing agencies to ensure this exercise is successfully carried out. We just came from the Upper West Region, and today we are here in Navrongo in the Upper East Region,” she stated.

According to her, the Authority is working to increase national population coverage from the current 70.1 percent to 80 percent under this year’s universal health coverage agenda.

“Our current population coverage stands at about 70.1 percent. This year, our theme is Universal Health Coverage, which means we are expected to cover at least 80 percent of the population,” she explained.

Norman also commended the Free Primary Healthcare initiative introduced by President John Dramani Mahama, describing it as a major step toward strengthening preventive healthcare delivery in the country.

She urged the public to take advantage of the initiative by enrolling onto the Scheme and accessing free primary healthcare services to maintain good health.

The Deputy Director further called on the media to intensify public education on the benefits of the NHIS and the ongoing free registration and renewal exercise to help increase enrollment nationwide.
