NPP internal comments have national implications – Mercy Abada
According to her, the remarks have far-reaching implications for Ghana’s democratic processes and must not be treated as merely an internal matter of the NPP.
A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team in the Navrongo Central Constituency, Mercy Abada, has cautioned against downplaying recent comments made by the Ashanti and Bono Regional Chairmen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to her, the remarks have far-reaching implications for Ghana’s democratic processes and must not be treated as merely an internal matter of the NPP.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday October 1, Abada said the comments suggested that the NPP, as the largest opposition party, might attempt to sidestep democratic procedures in the selection of its presidential candidate.
“It is not an internal matter because the NPP as an opposition party has a responsibility to ensure checks and balances in governance. What happens in the NPP should be of national interest to everybody, and that is why we should not just take the comments of Abronye DC and Wontumi lightly.” She stated.
Her concerns follow controversial remarks by the two NPP regional chairmen. The Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, is reported to have suggested that some internal measures would be put in place to ensure that only “loyal delegates” take part in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
Similarly, the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, is alleged to have hinted at moves to prevent certain individuals perceived to be disloyal from participating in the electoral process.
Abada expressed worry that such comments could erode public confidence in the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“If they can use crooked methods like blocking some people from voting to favor a certain candidate, then going into the 2028 elections it means Ghanaians should not trust anything the NPP will come up with,” she added.
She further questioned the rationale behind the NPP’s decision to refer only Abronye DC to its disciplinary committee, leaving out Chairman Wontumi, who made similar remarks.
