Olivia Kwoyire has been adjudged the Overall Best Farmer for the Kassena Nankana Municipal Assembly at the 41st Farmers’ Day celebration held at the forecourt of the Assembly.
She took home a motor tricycle (Motor King), Wellington boots, a T-shirt and cap, a parcel bag, a torchlight, a half piece of cloth, a raincoat, and a cutlass.
With over two decades of experience in farming, Olivia cultivated 12 acres of rice, one acre of beans, five acres of maize, and two acres of groundnuts in the 2024 farming season.
Speaking after receiving her award, she highlighted several challenges confronting farmers in the municipality and appealed to the government for intervention.
“Accessing affordable fertilizer and agrochemicals is a challenge for us. Combine harvesters and tractor services during harvesting and planting seasons are also a major issue. We also have rice on the farm, but there is no ready market.” She lamented.
She expressed gratitude to the organizers for the recognition, adding that the award would motivate her to work even harder in her farming activities.
Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive for Kassena Nankana, Faustina Akeyom Abulu, reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector.
“Upon assumption of office, the President minced no words in outlining his vision, placing agriculture at the centre of Ghana’s economic development agenda by transforming and modernising the sector through an all-inclusive plan to enhance food security, improve farm productivity, and strengthen linkages with industry to create jobs and improve rural livelihoods.” She said.
The MCE added that the government remained committed to improving the lives of farmers and ensuring a robust agricultural sector, and highlighted the farmers’ services initiative of the government, which she announced the Kassena Nankana Municipality will be a beneficiary.
“As part of the Feed Ghana Programme, the Government plans to pilot the establishment of Farmer Service Centres in four districts in the Upper East Region, and fortunately, the Kasena Nankana Municipality is one of the four beneficiary districts.”
Other deserving farmers were also honoured at the ceremony. Patrick Nabonase and Charles Amoah, the first and second runners-up respectively, received a motorbike, a deep freezer, and other items.
