Pedestrians and cyclists urged to face oncoming traffic to reduce road knockdowns
His comments come at the back of agitation from youth within the Kassena-Nankana area over the recent rise in road accident cases in the area.
The Acting Regional Public Relations Officer of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in the Upper East Region, John Quarshie, has urged pedestrians to walk facing oncoming vehicles to help reduce pedestrian knockdowns.
His comments come at the back of agitation from youth within the Kassena-Nankana area over the recent rise in road accident cases in the area.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Quarshie said many pedestrians often stick to the “Ghana Move Right” mantra and walk on the right side of the road in the same lane as motorists.
“If you know you are going to walk, then you have to stay on your left-hand side at all times and always face the oncoming vehicles.” He said.
He indicated that facing oncoming vehicles helps pedestrians notice impending danger and possibly avoid it.
Quarshie added that cyclists are also supposed to ride on the left side of the road at all times, emphasizing that only motorists are compelled by law to drive on the right side of the road.
“Only motorists and those using motorbikes and other vehicles can be on the right side; the rest should stay on the left.”
He further warned that persons knocked down while walking on the wrong side of the road may not be able to hold drivers responsible for the accident.
