According to the communication, the current water level at the Bagre Dam stands at 233.99 meters, representing a filling rate of 86.38%. The Kompienga Dam, also located in Burkina Faso, is at a water level of 177.66 meters.
The annual spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso has officially commenced, with water already being released downstream through the White and Black Volta rivers.
The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), via a transmission from SONABEL, the Burkinabé national electricity utility—alerted the Upper East Regional office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) about the spillage, which began earlier this week.
According to the communication, the current water level at the Bagre Dam stands at 233.99 meters, representing a filling rate of 86.38%. The Kompienga Dam, also located in Burkina Faso, is at a water level of 177.66 meters.
Officials have warned that the effects of the spillage will be felt within 48 hours along the White and Black Volta rivers in Ghana, potentially inundating communities, farmlands, and properties located along their banks.
The spillage poses a significant threat to low-lying areas in the Upper East, Upper West, North-East, and Northern regions of Ghana. In past years, the annual spillage has led to the destruction of crops, homes, and critical infrastructure, worsening the vulnerability of rural communities dependent on agriculture and riverine activities.
Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to evacuate to safer grounds and adhere to safety guidelines issued by the the National Disaster Management Organization emergency response measures.
