Star Ghana Foundation, WACCE and UE RCC holds cross-border security dialogue to tackle violent extremism

The high-level forum, held in Bolgatanga from March 24 to March 25, brought security agencies, government institutions, civil society organisations (CSOs) from the five northern regions and cross-border actors from Togo and Burkina Faso to deliberate on peace, stability, and coordinated responses to threats within the sub-region.

Star Ghana Foundation, in partnership with the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and West Africa Centre for Counter Extremism (WACCE), has held 7th Northern Ghana Security Dialogue and Cross-Border CSOs Forum in the Upper East Region.

The high-level forum, held in Bolgatanga from March 24 to March 25, brought security agencies, government institutions, civil society organisations (CSOs) from the five northern regions and cross-border actors from Togo and Burkina Faso to deliberate on peace, stability, and coordinated responses to threats within the sub-region.

Speaking in a media interview, the Executive Director of Star Ghana Foundation, Ibrahim Tanko Amadu, described the dialogue as a critical platform for collective action and coordination.

“This dialogue is a six-monthly conversation or space that brings together state and non-state actors in the five regions of northern Ghana to deliberate on the state of peace and security and to look at what we need to do to enhance peace and security and collaboration.”

The Executive Director of WACCE, Mutaru Mumuni Muqthar, raised concerns about the growing threat of violent extremism, particularly in border communities, and called for urgent, coordinated interventions.

“Violent extremism is a very complex security problem, and it requires a very deliberate, integrated approach.”

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of WACCE, , highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration in addressing shared security challenges, noting that no country can tackle such threats in isolation.

“If you are not able to link up with your colleagues across the other side, then you are likely to face some crisis that you may not be able to address. So, this platform is a very good platform for us. It has given us a platform for us to connect.”

The dialogue forms part of an initiative launched in March 2023 to address rising insecurity, conflicts, and weak coordination between state and non-state actors.
