The Constituency Youth Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Navrongo Central Constituency, Daniel Bayivere, has welcomed the government’s Free Primary Health Care Programme, describing it as a policy that will help promote a healthy population.
President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, launched the programme in Accra. The initiative focuses on providing primary healthcare services at no cost to patients at the community level.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, April 17, Bayivere said he personally views the Free Primary Health Care Programme as an addition to existing health policies introduced by previous governments, particularly those of the NPP.
“Personally, having heard of this policy and followed it, I see it as something that will promote human health and support a healthy population. I am always for such initiatives. You need a healthy population for development, economic growth, and good governance.” He said.
He noted that, unlike the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he claims often dismisses policy ideas from the NPP, his party will monitor the programme’s implementation to ensure it benefits the Ghanaian populace.
“Because we in the NPP always follow matters logically to their end, we will track this policy beyond the launch stage. There will be evaluation and diagnosis of the entire programme. In the short, medium, or long term, we will present our verdict on whether it is feasible or not.” He added.
Bayivere further emphasized that the NPP has, over the past eight years of its governance, made significant interventions in the health sector.
He also recalled that the then NDC opposition resisted the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) when the bill was presented to Parliament.
“When the NHIS bill was presented to Parliament in 2008, the NDC, then in opposition, opposed it, questioning how the government would fund the programme. They argued that it would make healthcare free for everyone and even walked out of Parliament during the process.” He said.
