Bolgatanga midwifery college: Regional Director of Health Services urges sustained excellence

Dr. Abubakari also provided an overview of maternal and child health statistics in Ghana and the Upper East Region, highlighting areas needing urgent attention.

The Upper East Regional Director of Health, Dr. Braimah Baba Abubakari has praised Midwifery Training College, Bolgatanga for its 75 years of service and excellence, highlighting its pivotal role in shaping maternal and child healthcare in Ghana.

Speaking at the college’s 75th Anniversary and Matriculation Ceremony on December 10, Dr Abubakari emphasised the need to sustain the institution’s legacy through continuous investment in skills, infrastructure, and innovation.

“75 years is a remarkable milestone. It is a testimony to resilience, vision, and commitment. This institution has not only trained generations of midwives, but has also shaped the very fabric of maternal and child healthcare in Ghana, particularly in Africa.” He said.

Reflecting on the historical context, the Director noted that the college was founded in the 1950s, a period marked by high maternal mortality, limited access to skilled birth attendants, and inadequate health infrastructure.

“Yet, missionary leaders recognized that the key to reducing maternal and child deaths lay in the hands of trained midwives. Over the decades, this college has risen to that challenge.” He added

Dr. Abubakari also provided an overview of maternal and child health statistics in Ghana and the Upper East Region, highlighting areas needing urgent attention.

“In absolute terms, in the year 2024, we lost 42 women who tried to give birth in the Upper East Region. Unfortunately, by the end of October 2025, we already lost 56 women.”

The Director further encouraged the new students matriculating that day, reminding them of the sacred responsibility of midwifery.

“Midwifery is not just a career. It is a calling. You will witness moments of joy and moments of sorrow. You will need compassion, resilience, and integrity. Every safe delivery, every healthy child, and every mother who survives childbirth because of your care is a victory to humanity.”
