Zakaria slams Attorney-General over dropped charges in UniBank case
Zakaria described the Attorney-General’s decision as unjustified and politically motivated, arguing that it undermines the credibility of the government’s anti-corruption agenda.
A communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Navrongo Central Constituency, Bawa Zakaria, has strongly criticised the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for discontinuing the prosecution of Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and seven others in the UniBank Ghana Limited case.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday July 30, Zakaria described the Attorney-General’s decision as unjustified and politically motivated, arguing that it undermines the credibility of the government’s anti-corruption agenda.
The Attorney-General filed a nolle prosequi on July 22, 2025, effectively ending the prosecution of Dr. Duffuor and others accused of playing roles in the collapse of UniBank. In justifying the move, Dr. Ayine cited the recovery of over 60% of the allegedly misappropriated funds and the desire to avoid further legal and administrative expenses.
However, Zakaria said this explanation contradicts the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s proclaimed anti-corruption agenda, particularly its “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) campaign.
“They formed Operation Recover All Loot, not Operation Recover Some Loot,” he said. “You claimed you would ensure anyone who looted Ghana was prosecuted, but when it involves your own, suddenly 60% is enough, and you abandon the case.”
Zakaria further suggested that the Attorney-General’s decision may be influenced by personal ties, noting that Dr. Ayine previously served as legal counsel for Dr. Duffuor. He alleged that Dr. Ayine might be shielding his former client from a potential conviction.
“The lawyer for Dr. Duffuor then was Dr. Ayine, he knows the nitty-gritty of the matter and knows very well that if the NPP had followed through, Dr. Duffuor could have ended up in jail.”
Backing the Minority’s call for Dr. Ayine to rescind his decision, Zakaria warned that failure to do so could lead to a legal showdown. He also described the move as setting a dangerous precedent for accountability and justice in Ghana.
