NEDCO warns against burying cables, says it is illegal

Alimata Bamie, a Customer Services Officer for NEDCO in the Upper East Region recounted a tragic incident in Tamale where underground cables caused the deaths of several people, including children.

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) has issued a strong warning to the public, urging consumers to refrain from burying cables underground in attempts to illegally access electricity, describing the practice as extremely dangerous and potentially deadly.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, May 15, Alimata Bamie, the  Upper East Regional Customer Services Officer, highlighted the severe risks associated with such illegal connections.

“If any of the wires you’ve buried is exposed and rainwater gathers there, the water becomes electrified and anyone passing by may get electrocuted. So you’re endangering the lives of innocent people,” she warned.

Bamie recounted a tragic incident in Tamale where underground cables caused the deaths of several people, including children.

According to her, children playing football chased their ball into a pool of water that had collected around exposed buried cables. One child who attempted to retrieve the ball was electrocuted, followed by another, and eventually a woman carrying a child who tried to intervene, all of whom died from the electric shock.

She attributed the growing trend of illegal connections to a combination of poor attitudes, corruption, weak law enforcement, and delays in processing official electricity connection requests.

Bamie emphasized that anyone caught engaging in such practices would face prosecution and urged the public to follow the proper procedures for electricity connections to ensure safety and legal compliance.
