Nogsenia Assemblyman undertakes clean-up exercise, vows to make Navrongo the cleanest town in Upper East

Addah stated that the clean-up forms part of a broader plan to decongest, clean, and light up the market, leaving a lasting legacy for his tenure.

The Assembly Member for the Nogsenia Electoral Area in the Kasena-Nankana Municipality, Teddy John Kwolaga Addah, has pledged to make Navrongo the cleanest town in the Upper East Region.

On Saturday, May 31, Addah organised a massive clean-up exercise in collaboration with the Environmental Health Department, the Ghana Prisons Service, Zoomlion Ghana, and other interest groups. The exercise focused on desilting and clearing major drainage systems in the Navrongo Old Market.

The initiative followed an earlier community sensitisation campaign aimed at promoting environmental hygiene and preventing sanitation-related diseases.

Speaking exclusively to Mike FM at the sidelines of the exercise, Addah stated that the clean-up forms part of a broader plan to decongest, clean, and light up the market, leaving a lasting legacy for his tenure.

“Sanitation is very expensive and requires collective effort. The commitment shown by the market women is motivating. I am confident that within a few months, Navrongo will become the cleanest town in the Upper East. It is achievable,” he said.

Edith Aduna, Assistant Municipal Director of the Environmental Health Department, emphasised the need to maintain a clean environment to prevent the spread of diseases. She urged residents to report sanitation offenders so appropriate sanctions can be enforced.

The Assemblyman for Nyangue Electoral Area, Kulelogo Fogelpaba Felix who also participated in the clean-up, expressed concern over the high levels of filth in the township. He encouraged residents to step up personal sanitation practices to avert sanitation-related disasters.

A volunteer, Eric Adunia, said that as an asthmatic patient, the stench from choked drains poses serious health challenges. He appreciated the involvement of inmates from the Navrongo Prison and called for the clean-up exercises to be conducted regularly.

Adunia also recommended the formation of a sanitation task force to enforce bylaws and curb open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the market area.

“Some people are turning the market into a hotel to do nasty things. If there is a task force, they would arrest them and make them pay fines. Adunia added.

Juliana, a trader at the market said “People come here defecating openly, and causing the entire place to stink. When you confront them, they insult you. We need strict enforcement—if offenders are fined GHC 1,000, no one will repeat such behaviour.”

The clean-up focused on desilting inner market drains from the pork butchery shop through the market to the main drain near the ‘After Six’ drinking spot. Sweeping also took place along the frontages of shops from the Ghana Education Office to the MTN retailer shop. The exercise is expected to be continued in subsequent days to ensure all major drains within the market are distilled before the onset of the rainy season.
