Narcotics Control Commission warns drug peddlers of crackdowns in Upper East Region

The warning comes as part of a broader public awareness campaign ahead of World Drug Day 2025, which will be observed on June 26 under the theme, “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All.”

The Upper East Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has issued a strong warning to drug peddlers in the region, urging them to desist from their illegal activities or face imminent crackdowns.

The warning comes as part of a broader public awareness campaign ahead of World Drug Day 2025, which will be observed on June 26 under the theme, “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All.”

Appearing on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday June 24, Senior Narcotics Drug Officer (SNDO) Godwin Abakuri Bazentum emphasised the Commission’s resolve to intensify enforcement and surveillance.

“We are issuing a stern warning that they should get prepared because we are coming for all of them. We don’t care who you are—when we have our evidence that you are into drugs, we are coming for you.” Abakuri warned.

We further appealed to the public to support law enforcement by volunteering information on drug-related activities, assuring that the identities of informants will be fully protected.

Abakuri also urged traditional authorities, opinion leaders, and community elders not to interfere when suspects are arrested.

“We are making an appeal to the community leaders to allow the law to work, because we are here to clamp down on drugs. But when we arrest someone, a chief or assemblyman comes and asks us to pardon them,” he fumed.

Also speaking on the program, SNDO Abdullai Isshaw, another officer with the Upper East Command, encouraged families and communities to assist drug users in accessing counselling and rehabilitation services rather than isolating or criminalising them.

“The Commission has a counselling unit, so when you reach out to us, we will offer counselling to people who are unfortunately into drugs and make referrals to treatment centres. So, anyone with a relative who needs help should reach out to us.” Isshaw said.

He also warned the youth about the dangers of drug abuse and advised passengers to be cautious while using commercial transport, noting that drug traffickers increasingly use unsuspecting travelers to carry narcotics.

Both officers reiterated NACOC’s unwavering commitment to making the Upper East Region drug-free and called for a united effort involving local communities, families, and civil society in combating drug abuse and trafficking.
